I always made sure to tell the person I was dating that I have vWD so that if something were to happen, they were educated enough to help in the situation. I found that most of the guys I dated were very open to learning about it. My husband, when we first started dating, was extremely receptive to learning about it. We were together for no more than 6 months when we attended an educational event that was held by the Bleeding Disorder Foundation of Washington. When I told him about it, he actually asked if he could go. I had planned on going by myself, so when he asked me if he could go I was really happy.
Before that, he actually did some research on his own and asked me questions to clarify. It actually made me feel like he was legitimately interested in getting to know everything about me. I was also very happy that he wasn't scared off by the bleeding disorder; he wasn't intimidated by it.
I found the only thing that really created an issue was the general lack of knowledge about the disorder. People always assume that when I get a paper cut I'll bleed out. That always makes me laugh.
