To anyone who is struggling, just remember you've got this!
When I played sports I almost forget I am not like the other kids. That was until I took a hit and it turned purple. Learning how to overcome my blood disorder has been hard but finally I can. My name is Caitlin and I’m from Australia I’ve been under investigation for a blood disorder for years (since I was at least 13 so not as long as most of you). Before then, everyone brushed off what happened as normal. It took years before I even got close to a diagnosis and I kept being told “no sports” due to the fact it had caused a brain bleed, a hip bleed and many more suspected bleeds already. My mental health rapidly declined. After some time my doctors realised they’d only been treating half the patient and knew they had to try something to put me back in the game (soccer). I was put on Ddavp (desmopressin) for some time but recently switched to tranexamic acid which has been working relatively well. Unfortunately I still don’t have a diagnosis as my disorder is so rare that the closest I’ve gotten is platelet disfunction disorder. I currently play soccer and am switching clubs to play at a higher level now. Without the support of everyone in my team I wouldn’t be where I am today. Whilst many may not be able to play the sport they love if any at all I want to remind you that it’s okay and you’ll just need to find something that makes you shine and makes you happy.
